Term 1

Term 1 had the following subjects:

Financial Accounting and Decision Making - The course allows us to understand financial statements. How can financial statements be tuned (manipulated???) to benefit the managers of the company?

Managerial Economics - Lots of micro-economics. Supply and Demand decisions in a Monopoly, Oligopoly and Perfect Competition. The second half of the course focused on Game Theory. Rakesh Vohra, who taught us Game Theory, is an engaging professor. He uses class discussions and engages in dialogues with students to clarify issues and doubts.

Statistical Methods - the course is taught at a very fast pace. One needs to understand that the learning of this course will be used in a number of other courses, so one better be thorough with the learning from this course.

Marketing Management - Knowledge of fundamentals of marketing. Yet again taught at a very fast pace. One has to do a lot of pre and post read to appreciate the learning during class.

Apart from the above, group work is the most major challenge. There are two aspects of this, first the diversity of thought process of the group, and second the free ridership problem. The first part is most welcome, it allows you to learn more. You learn by listening to others, and by adding weight to your own arguments. The second problem is an issue wherein some team members do not contribute to group work. Need to learn how to deal with this. Till now I have had the benefit of using authority to pull up people not performing to expectations, but without the benefit of authority handling this behavior is a major challenge.
